Keeping your Airsoft AEG clean is crucial for maintaining performance, accuracy, and the lifespan of your gun. Even if you only play occasionally, dust, BB residue, and oil buildup can cause jams or wear down components over time. The good news is that cleaning your AEG doesn’t need to be complicated — with a few careful steps, you can keep it running smoothly.

Important: Do not ever use WD‑40, household oils, or other petroleum-based lubricants on your AEG. These can damage your hop-up, seals, and gearbox, leading to malfunctions and long-term wear.

1. Prepare Your Workspace

Before you start, make sure you have a clean, well-lit area and the right tools. Safety first:

  • Remove the battery and magazine.

  • Ensure the gun is unloaded.

  • Have basic cleaning supplies ready: silicone oil, cleaning rod or pull-through, soft cloth, cotton swabs, and optional small brushes.

2. Clean the Barrel

The barrel is one of the most critical parts of your AEG for accuracy:

  • Use a cleaning rod or pull-through with a soft cloth or patch.

  • Lightly lubricate with silicone oil to prevent rust and friction.

  • Run it through several times until it comes out clean.

  • Avoid using petroleum-based oils (including WD‑40).

3. Wipe Down the Exterior

Your AEG’s body accumulates dirt, mud, and sweat from handling:

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and grime.

  • For stubborn spots, lightly dampen the cloth with water or silicone oil.

  • Check rails, stock, and pistol grip for debris that might affect performance.

4. Lubricate Moving Parts

Proper lubrication keeps gears, piston, and motor working efficiently:

  • Apply a few drops of silicone oil to the gearbox’s moving components (outside if not disassembling).

  • Wipe off excess oil to avoid attracting dust.

  • Avoid over-lubricating — too much oil can cause jams or attract grit.

  • Never use WD‑40 or similar products inside the gearbox.

5. Check and Clean the Hop-Up Unit

The hop-up is essential for consistent accuracy:

  • Remove the inner barrel if possible and inspect the hop-up rubber.

  • Wipe away any BB residue or dust.

  • Apply a tiny amount of silicone oil to maintain flexibility.

6. Reassemble and Test

Once everything is clean and lubricated:

  • Reinstall the battery and magazine.

  • Dry-fire a few rounds (without BBs) to ensure smooth operation.

  • Inspect for any unusual sounds or resistance.

Quick Tips

  • Clean your AEG after every few games, or immediately if you notice decreased performance.

  • Store your gun in a dry, cool place to prevent moisture damage.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals — they can degrade plastic or seals.

  • WD‑40 is never safe for any part of your AEG.

A properly cleaned AEG is more reliable, accurate, and longer-lasting. Following these steps and sticking to silicone oil will keep your gun in top condition for every game.
